The ongoing reconstruction of New Orleans has laid bare key urban issues, including affordable housing, immigration, urban redevelopment and economic displacement. Causa Justa :: Just Cause is partnering with PolicyLink, The National Radio Project/Making Contact, and the Land of Opportunity Project to present an evening that explores the meaning of home and community in an age of displacement and migration, and connects struggles around housing and immigration in New Orleans to what is happening here in Oakland.

Please join us for an evening of film and discussion about home, community, immigration, and displacement and the future of our cities from New Orleans to Oakland. This event is free and open to the public, but donations will be collected to cover the event costs and to support Right to the City affiliate groups in New Orleans.

The film Land of Opportunity aims to re-frame the 5th anniversary of Katrina into the beginning of a discussion as opposed to a conclusion. New Orleans is a starting point for a national conversation on the future of urban America. From Oakland to Detroit to New Orleans, cities are experiencing disasters every day whether they’re defined as economic, natural or man-made. This film provides viewers an opportunity to redefine and rethink what “disaster recovery” means for our cities.

As we honor the 5th anniversary of Katrina, we commit to continuing to challenge the root causes of these everyday disasters and lift up and celebrate the resilience and resistance of people struggling against oppression around the world.
