Immig_ADD_Angelica is crying. She’s remembering when police stopped her husband while he was driving in a Bay Area city. It seemed like a random stop — perhaps a rosary hanging from the rear view mirror, maybe a drive through a yellow light. Pick a reason. They took him into custody at Santa Rita jail, where his fingerprints where checked against Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s database. Angelica said that because he had a previous DUI (Driving Under the Influence) charge, or, a minor criminal conviction, a hold was issued for him. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers picked him up. He was deported.

The need for affordable housing is clear, from the tens of thousands of Atlanta residents that scrambled to get on a Section 8 waitlist last year to the 55,000 households that applied to be on Oakland's Section 8 waitlist in January. San Francisco waitlists for public housing and Section 8 combined total more than 40,000 households in need of affordable housing.

BillyTriceJr_MemberArticle_Both-1I've been a member of Causa Justa::Just Cause since 2000. I first got involved in the work to get a Just Cause Eviction Ordinance passed in Oakland. This ordinance, called Measure EE was going to require that landlords have a reason before they evict tenants from their property. I thought this was a really important tenant protection to have in our city so I did a lot of phone banking and precinct-walking to help pass the measure. It was a long and hard fight but I was really proud when it we won.
