Political Director (Full-Time Position)


We are a grassroots alliance of base-building community organizations in San Francisco who have come together to build the political power of poor and working class people of color in San Francisco.  We are based in San Francisco’s working class communities of color: Causa Justa :: Just Cause (CJJC), Chinese Progressive Association (CPA), Coleman Advocates for Children and Youth, Filipino Community Center (FCC), Mujeres Unidas y Activas (MUA), People Organized to Win Employment Rights (POWER), People Organizing to Demand Environmental and Economic Rights (PODER), South of Market Community Action Network (SOMCAN), and SF Day Labor Program/La Colectiva de Mujeres.

We are each building power in our neighborhoods but seek to seize, and build upon, our collective electoral experience. We share a long-term vision for racial and economic justice, and a commitment to run sophisticated operations during annual election cycles to produce real victories. We see electoral organizing as a strategy that should complement and be organically integrated with, our movement-building strategies.

The Political Director coordinates the implementation of San Francisco Rising’s (SFR) strategic vision through our campaign work.  The Political Director will work to coordinate and direct SFR’s electoral and legislative work in conjunction with SFR’s member organizations, and assist in the coordination of SFR’s leadership development activities to prepare SFR to play active, effective roles in the local, state and national movement.

CAMPAIGN DEVELOPMENT AND STRATEGY: ELECTORAL

  • Coordinates with SFR members and staff to plan and implement electoral and legislative goals and strategies
  • Coordinates with SFR member organizations to plan and direct all aspects of SFR’s electoral and legislative campaigns
  • Successfully implements the political strategy of the organization’s programmatic work
  • Effectively engages the members and staff of the member organizations in the development of the campaign work, the implementation and development of the strategy, and the evaluation of our efforts
  • Facilitates the development of strong relationships between SFR member organizations and decision-makers locally and statewide
  • Develops and implements a communications strategy for SFR and it’s work

COMMITTEE COORDINATION

  • Coordinates and directs SFR’s Coordinating Committee
  • Coordinates and directs SFR’s Steering Committee
  • Coordinates and directs SFR’s quarterly membership assemblies

LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT

  • Plans, directs and evaluates all aspects of SFR’s leadership development programs
  • Plans and directs training programs to support capacity building and campaign implementation amongst SFR’s member organizations

SUPERVISION AND SUPPORT

  • Effectively carries out systems for supervision and support of SFR’s field staff and volunteers

ORGANIZATIONAL SUPPORT

  • Participate in SFR Coordinating Committee meetings, Steering Committee meetings, Membership Assemblies, planning and evaluation retreats

RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT AND RELATIONSHIP BUILDING

  • Active and regular participation in and contributions to SFR’s grassroots and foundation fundraising work
  • Builds strong relationships with local organizations and decision makers

ADDITIONAL DUTIES

The job position will require some work during nights and weekends, as needed.

KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

  • Responsible for the development and effective implementation of SFR’s electoral and legislative campaigns
  • Develops and successfully implements the political strategy of the organization’s work
  • Coordinates and directs SFR’s committee work
  • Trains members and staff in campaign development and strategy, documents and evaluates curriculum used
  • Trains members and staff in effective civic engagement strategies and skills, documents and evaluates curriculum used
  • Effectively carries out systems for supervision and support of SFR’s field staff and volunteers
